Mumbai on High Alert: Emergency Measures Amid Monkeypox Scare

Rashmi | 30 Aug, 2024

In response to the global surge in monkeypox (Mpox) cases, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has established a 14-bed isolation ward at SevenHills Hospital in Marol, Mumbai. While no cases have been detected in India, recent reports from Pakistan and Sweden have raised concerns, prompting precautionary steps to manage any potential outbreak.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a global health emergency, citing the rapid spread of Mpox, particularly in the Eastern region of Congo. This declaration signals the urgent need for preparedness and heightened vigilance across healthcare systems worldwide. The disease's spread beyond Africa, with confirmed cases in countries like Sweden, emphasizes its global reach and the importance of containment efforts.

At Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, the Airport Health Officer (APHO) department has implemented thermal screening of passengers arriving from affected countries. This measure is part of a broader effort to monitor and prevent the entry of the virus into India. A health information desk has also been set up at the airport to ensure swift identification and response to suspected cases.

The BMC’s proactive approach, including isolation facilities and surveillance, aligns with WHO’s warnings about the potential for further spread. For healthcare professionals in Mumbai, staying informed and ready to manage possible cases will be critical as the global health situation develops.
