FDA Approves Over-the-Counter Hearing Aid Features for Apple AirPods

Rashmi P | 12 Sep, 2024

The FDA has granted de novo clearance for hearing aid features in Apple’s AirPods Pro 2, marking the tech giant’s official entry into the hearing aid market. This regulatory approval is significant as it introduces over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aid technology into a widely used consumer audio product, potentially reshaping the landscape of hearing support for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss.

Apple’s newly authorized “clinical-grade” hearing aid feature allows users to self-administer a hearing test through their AirPods and subsequently adjust volume, tone, and balance settings. These adjustments carry over across all connected Apple devices, making the hearing aid function seamlessly integrated with phone calls, music, and other audio content. The ease of accessibility and affordability associated with the AirPods Pro 2 may present a disruptive force in the hearing aid market, which has traditionally been dominated by more expensive, prescription-required devices.

According to the FDA, over 30 million U.S. adults suffer from some degree of hearing loss. The availability of an affordable OTC option could increase accessibility to hearing aids, particularly for individuals who may not seek professional care due to the cost or stigma associated with traditional hearing aids. In clinical trials, Apple’s self-fitting hearing aid technology demonstrated similar effectiveness to fittings conducted by hearing professionals, further supporting its potential as a convenient, user-friendly alternative.

The FDA’s decision builds upon its 2022 ruling, which allowed OTC hearing aids as part of an effort to lower costs and improve access to hearing health technologies. Apple's entry into this sector aligns with this initiative and underscores the broader trend of consumer technology companies making strides in healthcare solutions.

By leveraging Apple’s established user base and the AirPods Pro’s relatively low cost, the FDA’s approval could democratize access to hearing aids, offering a viable option to those with mild to moderate hearing loss and changing the dynamics of hearing support technology.
