Invasive fungal infections (IFIs) are a critical health concern in India, often presenting significant challenges in diagnosis and management. These infections require timely and accurate treatment, but clinicians across various specialties face barriers such as delays in therapy, limited access to advanced diagnostics, and diverse patient factors. Understanding these issues was crucial to improving outcomes for patients affected by IFIs.

Objective

The objective was to identify the specific challenges healthcare professionals face in diagnosing and managing IFIs and gather actionable insights to enhance clinical practices. A comprehensive survey was designed to target clinicians across specialties like hematology, infectious diseases, critical care, microbiology, oncology, and transplant surgery. The aim was to analyze diagnostic practices, treatment preferences, and barriers to effective management.

Strategy

To achieve this, a survey was conducted between July and August 2024 using a digital outreach strategy. The initiative involved:

1. Targeting 16,490 healthcare professionals through medical apps, email campaigns, and SMS.
2. Designing two surveys (A and B) with a total of 20 questions, ensuring the same respondents completed both parts for comprehensive data collection.
3. Engaging clinicians across private and government institutions to ensure diverse input.
4. Analyzing participation by specialty, location, and experience to understand the breadth of the challenges.

The survey received robust engagement, with over 71,000 impressions, nearly 6,000 interactions, and an 8% click-through rate. Responses were collected from intensivists, microbiologists, transplant physicians, and others, with the highest participation from Maharashtra, followed by Delhi and Haryana.

Result

The survey successfully identified key challenges in IFI management, including delays in antifungal therapy, varying diagnostic methods, and limited clinician familiarity with newer treatments. Most responses came from private institutions, highlighting their role in tackling complex conditions.

• Key Insights: Intensivists provided the most responses, and younger professionals with less than 10 years of experience formed the majority of participants.
• Impact: The findings underscore the need for targeted educational programs, better access to diagnostic tools, and enhanced collaboration across specialties.

The survey provided actionable data that can inform future initiatives, driving improvements in IFI diagnosis and treatment. By fostering continued education and leveraging digital platforms, clinicians can address existing gaps, ultimately enhancing patient care and outcomes.
