Dexcom and Beyond Type 2 Launch Glucose Awareness Week with Focus on Education and Stelo Sensor

Dexcom, in collaboration with the nonprofit organization Beyond Type 2, has launched National Glucose Awareness Week, an initiative aimed at increasing awareness around glucose health and its impact on those with Type 2 diabetes and prediabetes. The week-long event, held from September 23 to September 29, 2024, seeks to educate the public about factors such as diet, exercise, and sleep habits that influence glucose levels. The campaign also promotes the recently launched Dexcom Stelo sensor, which helps users track real-time changes in glucose levels.

This initiative is critical because it addresses a knowledge gap in the management of Type 2 diabetes and prediabetes. According to a Dexcom survey, only 10% of individuals with these conditions understand how lifestyle factors influence their glucose levels. With more than 20% of Type 2 diabetes patients and 80% of those with prediabetes unaware of their conditions, early detection and proper management are essential to preventing long-term complications. Through targeted education, the awareness week aims to improve understanding and encourage proactive glucose monitoring, potentially leading to earlier interventions.

The Stelo sensor, Dexcom’s first over-the-counter continuous glucose monitor (CGM) approved by the FDA, plays a pivotal role in this campaign. Designed for people with prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes who do not require insulin, the Stelo sensor allows users to track glucose changes in real-time, offering a valuable tool for those looking to manage their condition effectively. Unlike traditional CGMs, Stelo is accessible without a prescription, making it easier for patients to take control of their health.

This educational initiative also benefits healthcare providers, as it emphasizes the importance of glucose awareness in preventive care and patient education. By promoting early detection and proper management strategies, it highlights how innovations like the Stelo sensor can support improved outcomes in diabetes care, which remains a growing global concern.
